New Smiles

It's been a big "smile" week in our house. Last Tuesday (6/16), Anna lost her first tooth. Now, you'd think this would be a really cool thing, but not to my drama queen. Ohhhh, there were tears. She cried about the blood (and yes, it fell out on it's own... well, I was brushing her teeth when it happened). She cried that she didn't want to be 5 anymore, she wanted to be three again, so her teeth wouldn't fall out. She cried that I couldn't put it back in. Yes, drama. But, when we put her tooth into her special tooth fairy box, and explained (for like the 100th time) all about how cool the tooth fairy was, she let the drama go and quickly dozed off to sleep. By morning, it was finally cool to have lost a tooth, and now she's proud to show it off to anyone who will look and listen. Even the dentist today got to check out her new smile.

And then there's Emily, who also saw the dentist this morning, but she got to preface it with a trip to the orthodontist. What started as a routine expander check ended with a shiny new smile. Long story short, there was a little communication breakdown, and the orthodontist thought we had chosen to wait on the braces, and I was waiting for him to tell us to make the appt to put them on. So, without any time to emotionally prep for this one, Emily was escorted back to the chair for her braces. And, being the colorful one that she is, she chose bright turquoise bands (her favorite color) alternating with gold ones. Cute, huh?

It's hard to believe she's only 8. The braces certainly make her look so much more grown up (to me anyway). They shouldn't have to be on too long... I think. And, aren't they so much cooler than when we were kids. I didn't get to choose cool band colors. :)
